The A’s open their final series of the 2008 season tonight at 7:10 in Seattle, as each team sends a promising right-handed flame thrower to the hill.

The A’s, who can match last season’s win total of 76 with their next victory, will throw Sean Gallagher, who has allowed only 8 hits and four earned runs in 17.2 innings since returning from the disabled list. Gallagher can truly feel he ended the season on a high note by wrapping up a four consecutive successful start tonight.

The M’s will counter with Brandon Morrow, the fifth overall pick in the 2006 draft, who will be making his fifth career big-league start. After he compiled a sparkling 1.47 ERA in 40 relief appearances earlier this season, the Mariners inserted Morrow into the rotation in September, and he has continued to impress, albeit not as much as he did in relief.

Morrow’s last start came against the A’s on September 21, where the A’s patient approach led to five walks in 6.1 innings against him. But Morrow held Oakland to just 2 hits.

Morrow’s conversion back to starting pitching is a much-needed exciting development for Mariners fans, who have seen their team and organization fall into a state of disarray:

Conversely, I’m finding myself more and more excited about the 2009 A’s. Travis Buck has a pair of homers in the past week and back-to-back multi-hit games. I find myself dreaming about a Cust-Sweeney-Buck outfield in ’09, with Giambi at DH and Chavy and first, and the damage that could be done against right-handed pitching.

I’m also heartened by the September success of Cliff Pennington, who is making a strong claim for the ’09 second base job. Cliff has played 17 games and has 58 at-bats in September, and he’s gone .298/.406/.333, good for a .739 OPS. He’s also an outstanding baserunner and he has a great throwing arm.

The other benefit to starting Pennington at second base is that he can also be the backup/emergency shortstop, reducing the need to carry a 6th infielder. That frees the team to carry a “true” DH (like Giambi or Frank Thomas) and yet still have 12 pitchers on the roster, which might be necessary due to the ’09 starters’ inconsistency.

If everyone’s healthy (ha!) I could see the ’09 A’s opening the year with Hannahan and Donnie Murphy platooning at third, Pennington at second, Chavez at first, and Rajai Davis and Denorfia (both RHBs) backing up the all-lefty starting outfield and pinch-running for Cust and Giambi/Thomas/DHman.

The nice thing about that set of backups is that the team wouldn’t be worried about stunting the development of any of them if they didn’t get regular at-bats, and they provide nice complements for the left-handed-heavy starting lineup. Hannahan’s numbers vs. righties (.676 OPS) are not good, but easier to swallow than his overall line. He can also back up Chavez as first and play good defense at either corner.

That group of 13 hitters would also mean optioning down a ton of studs and creating perhaps the best AAA lineup in a long time: Powell (C), CarGon (CF), Cunningham (RF), Murton (LF), Baisley (3b), Petit (SS), Patterson (2b), Barton (1b). It would probably be a bit easier for each of them to swalllow their pride about being in Sacramento when they look around the diamond and see a future big leaguer at literally every position. How many AAA teams in history have been able to boast that?

here are 10 great tips that all producers should recognize. i ganked the list from one of my favorite blogs music thing. enjoyclick here for the list-> 1. keep radiogram runs short particularly low impedance i.e. guitars and mics. it will affect the conservative. having said that i don’t believe expensive cables offer significant improvement.2. even the best instruments and recording equipment will probably sound like crap in the wrong hands. the reverse can also be true.3. don’t suck the existence not allowed of a recording by overuse of limiting and compression.4. go for performance not perfection.5. log the aggregate on a recording so that anyone can pick up where you left off. particularly tracks that should not be used – better lull, advance a gain access to rid of them.6. often consolidate tracks (in other words all tracks should suffer with the same start and dispose of times) so that they can be loaded onto a distinguishable platform. give every track a meaningful name.7. even if your ideas are making all the difference, make the other person think they were theirs.8. the two most important things on a great record are: 1. the long explanation. 2. the song.9. on no occasion charge anyone in the music business with a vowel in their name.10. the check is not in the correspondence.

Week Four Picks: A Crazy NFL Season

Well for my first week picking games I think I fared pretty well. I mean who would have thought Indianapolis was going to lose at home again? Along with the smack-down that Miami put on New England. I ended up going 11-5 in my first week picking games ever, and I am thinking that is not too bad of a start.

This week is going to be another good week in the NFL. There are a lot of good games to look forward too, and a lot of tough picks. It is hard to just pick teams this season with what has happened in the first three weeks of the NFL.

You have Buffalo 3-0, and Atlanta 2-1. Then you have Indianapolis at 1-2, and San Diego as well. This season may just be one of those years when we have a lot of new faces in the playoffs, which I believe is a good thing.

Now onto my picks for week four of the NFL season.

1. Minnesota (1-2) at Tennessee (3-0)

Now I did not see the Titans starting off the season 3-0, I am not going to lie. I also did not see the Vikings starting the season at 1-2. Where does that put me for this game then? I like Tennessee yet again this week, because they are at home, and seem to have everything working together right now, even without Vince Young.Titans 28 – Vikings 20

2. Denver (3-0) at Kansas City (0-3)

This is a no brainer, and everybody should pick Denver in this one. The offense is just putting up points all over the place so far this year. The defense though is allowing a lot of points as well. Kansas City has no answer to this onslaught, Denver wins big.Broncos 38 – Chiefs 13

3. San Francisco (2-1) at New Orleans (1-2)

New Orleans had the win Sunday, but let it get away from them, I do not see them doing the same this weekend at home. San Francisco has been looking pretty decent so far, but I do not think that they can go into New Orleans and pull this one out.Saints 30 – 49′s 20

4. Arizona (2-1) at New York Jets (1-2)

Arizona I think has figured it out. They need to throw the ball, and keep throwing the ball. The one-two punch of Boldin and Fitzgerald is a deadly combo for Arizona, and I think if they continue this it will payoff for them again Sunday.

The NY Jets just seem to still not have it yet. With all their off-season acquisitions, one would think that they should be a contender, but are now not looking like that at all. The West will beat the East in this Sunday contest.Cardinals 30 – Jets 23

5. Green Bay (2-1) at Tampa Bay (2-1)

This again should be a tough challenge for up and coming Packers as they head down South for this game. Rodgers is looking good already this year, and even though they lost this past weekend he seemed to still do very well.

Tampa pulled one out last weekend in the closing seconds, but I do not think that they can pull this one out this weekend. I am taking Green Bay away.Packers 28 – Tampa Bay 21

6. Atlanta (2-1) at Carolina (2-1)

Ok so who saw Atlanta in first place after three weeks? Ya exactly nobody did. This team throws in a rookie QB into the mix, and now this team is looking like they have been playing together for five years.

The bad news though for them is that they have to travel to Charlotte to play a tough Carolina team. Carolina has their star Steve Smith back, and I think this will help them pull threw this game.Panthers 23 – Falcons 16

7. Houston (0-3) at Jacksonville (1-2)

This is too easy, so I am not going to talk much about it. Jacksonville is too go to even be 1-2, and Houston is at the right record of 0-3. Jacksonville wins an easy one.Jaguars 33 – Texans 13
